Athenas Lacrosse Drops Tight 17-14 Decision to Chicago at Zinda

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Grace Minturn, Amelia Ulmer and Kate Larson each had three goals, and Lyla Johnston finished with a career-high 17 saves, but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team ended up on the short end of a 17-14 decision to No. 21 Chicago on Sunday at Zinda Field. 

With the loss, CMS slips to 3-1 on the season, while Chicago moves to 2-1 on the year with the win. 

The Maroons outscored CMS 6-1 in the fourth to take the final momentum swing to earn the win. Ruby Maki put the Athenas ahead 14-12 with a goal with 11:43 to go, but Chicago scored the last five to come back and get the win.

Minturn and Cate Lewison put CMS ahead 2-0 in the opening minutes, but Chicago went ahead 3-2 with the next three goals. Ulmer and Summer Matsik scored to give CMS the lead back, before the Maroons went on a 5-1 run to go ahead 8-5. 

Minturn, Larson and Ulmer closed out the half with goals to tie the score 8-8 at intermission, and Ella Seidel started the second half with a goal to make it a 4-0 run and give CMS a 9-8 lead. Chicago took the back back 10-9, and then Lewison and Ulmer scored consecutive goals to put the Athenas ahead 11-10.

After the Maroons tied it, Larson scored with 1:06 to go in the third and Minturn added one with 10 seconds left to give CMS a 13-11 advantage going into the fourth.

Julia Ryan finished with 16 draw controls and Cate Lewison added nine for CMS. Lewison also had a team-high four ground balls, and Kate Risse led the Athenas with two caused turnovers. 

The Athenas return to action with two SCIAC home contests this week, taking on Occidental on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 11 a.m.
