Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Athenas Water Polo Falls 12-11 in SCIAC Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Jordan LaCour had four goals for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to score three straight goals to start the fourth quarter and come back for a 12-11 win over the Athenas on Wednesday evening in the SCIAC opener for both teams at Haldeman Pool.

With the loss, CMS now stands at 3-6 on the season, including 1-1 against the Sagehens, with a 10-5 win last month at the CSU Fullerton Invitational.

In that game, the score was tied 5-5 before the Athenas outscored Pomona-Pitzer 5-0 in the fourth quarter to pull away. This time around, the inverse happened, as only a late penalty shot with 14 seconds left from Caitlin Muñoz prevented CMS was being shut out in the fourth, as Pomona-Pitzer went from down 10-9 with eight minutes left, to up 12-10 down the stretch.

LaCour scored the final goal of the first half to deadlock the score at 7-7 heading into the break, and then followed a goal from Christina Marlow with her fourth to give CMS a 9-7 lead. After two straight Pomona-Pitzer goals, Tatum Dwyer found the back of the net to put the Athenas ahead 10-9 heading into the final stanza.

LaCour scored the first goal for CMS to tie the score 1-1, which was followed by two in a row from Isabel Del Villar to put the Athenas ahead 3-1. Grace Clark scored to make it a 4-2 game with 2:25 left in the first, and LaCour scored twice in the second and Muñoz scored one to make it a 7-7 game at the half.

CMS will be back in action for its home opener on Saturday, when it takes on La Verne at 11 a.m. at Axelrood Pool.
