THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Caleigh Edwards finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 14-14 at the line, and Katie Resendiz had nine of her 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team defeated top-seeded Cal Lutheran 69-58 to earn the SCIAC Tournament title on Saturday evening at Gilbert Arenas. 

With the win, CMS improves to 20-7 overall and will advance to the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time since 2017. Cal Lutheran slips to 22-5 on the year with the loss, with two of its defeats coming to CMS.

The Athenas held Cal Lutheran to only four points in the second quarter as it built a 30-17 halftime lead. Cal Lutheran responded after intermission to get back within 44-38 after three quarters, and then got the lead down to just one point at 44-43 with two quick baskets in the fourth. 

Resendiz, though, answered the challenge for CMS with two big three-pointers, the first to put the Athenas up 47-43, and the second to answer a Regal basket and make the score 50-45 with 6:45 to go. Kylie Wang hit two foul shots to make it a seven-point lead, and Edwards answered a Cal Lutheran basket to make the score 54-47 with 4:56 left. 

Another key basket from Resendiz stretched the lead to 56-49 with 3:09 to go, and Ghai answered a Cal Lutheran basket to make the score 58-51 with 2:06 to play. Edwards went 8-8 at the line in the last two two minutes to help seal the win. 

Ghai was also in double figures for CMS with 17 points, while adding 10 rebounds. Edwards had five steals defensively, and also led the Athenas with four assists. 

CMS will find out its NCAA Tournament destination on Monday when selections are announced on NCAA.com.
