CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Warren Pham picked up the clinching point with a 7-5 win in a third-set tiebreaker as the No. 1-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned a tight 4-3 win over No. 7 Bowdoin in the first of two matches on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Complex.
CMS also earned a 5-2 win over No. 25 Haverford to complete the sweep of day and move to 13-0 on the season. Bowdoin suffers its first loss as it falls to 4-1.
The Polar Bears took the doubles point with 6-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3, despite a 6-2 win from
Caleb Settles and
Advik Mareedu at No. 1.
Josh Kim picked up the first point for CMS with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to cut the Bowdoin lead to 2-1.
Mareedu then earned a three-setter at No. 1 to tie the match, controlling the first and third sets in a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 win.
Henry Wilson then overcame a first-set tiebreaker defeat (7-4) to earn a 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 to give CMS a 3-2 advantage.
The final two matches were up in the air at No. 2 and No. 3, as Pham needed to hold serve to stay in it down 5-4 and 6-5 in the third. He got it to a tiebreaker, and then was able to win the final two points of the tiebreaker after it was tied 5-5 to finish off a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 victory and give CMS the clinch.
Sibi Raja ended up on the short end of a Marathon 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 defeat at No. 3 for the final point after the team decision was clinched.
Kim had a dominant performance at No. 1 singles in the second match, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Wilson picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2.
Amrith Kodumuri also had a strong win at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-3) and Settles added a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 3.
CMS will be back in action when it co-hosts the Stag-Hen Invitational next weekend, opening with a game against Trinity on Friday.
