CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team outscored Chapman 6-1 in the third quarter to break open a close game and take a 16-7 win on Saturday morning at Axelrood Pool.
Grace Clark had five goals and two assists to lead the way for the Athenas, who move to 8-9 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC with the win.
Caitlin Muñoz added two goals and three assists, to go along with a game-high six steals.
Valerie Wraith had two goals in a 3-0 run to end the first quarter, sandwiched around one from
Pooja Bucklin, to make it a 5-2 CMS lead. Clark scored early in the second quarter, but Chapman was able to keep the Athenas stuck on six goals, and was able to keep it within 6-3 at the break.
Clark and
Isabel Del Villar opened the third quarter with goals, and Chapman cut it to 8-4, before CMS closed out the frame with four straight goals to put it away.
Jasmine Tang started the run, which was followed by two in a row from Clark, before Muñoz closed out the third with a goal to make it 12-4.
Del Villar made it a 5-0 run with the first goal of the fourth, and
Tatum Dwyer scored twice in the fourth, and
Grace Rich added one, to help put it away.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday for a doubleheader, taking on Harvard at 4 p.m., and Whittier at 7 p.m.
