CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Valerie Wraith and
Grace Clark each had three goals as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team earned a 16-3 win over Whittier in its second of two home games at Axelrood Pool, after falling to No. 12 Harvard 17-7 in the opener.
With the split, CMS moves to 9-10 on the season, with nine losses to Division I programs and a split with Pomona-Pitzer its only blemishes. Harvard moves to 22-1 on the year with the win, while Whittier falls to 2-4 in league play and 3-16 overall with the loss.
The Athenas led 5-0 after the first quarter against Whittier, behind five different goal scorers, as
Jordan LaCour, Clark, Wraith,
Christina Marlow and
Tatum Dwyer each scored. In the second quarter, Wraith finished her hat trick, LaCour and Clark scored their second, and
Sydney Kroonen added one.
CMS also received second half goals from
Fiona Murphy,
Grace Rich,
Adrienne Medak and
Isabel Del Villar on its way to the 16-3 win. Murphy also had four steals and two field blocks defensively, while Wraith, Del Villar and Dwyer added three steals.
In the first game, Harvard took a 10-0 lead into the half, before the Athenas settled in and played a stronger second half, scoring seven goals to finish on the short end of a 17-7 defeat. Wraith finished with three goals, and Del Villar added two.
CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Cal Lutheran for a SCIAC contest.
