Athenas Softball Takes Two One-Run Wins at Willamette

SALEM, Ore. – Perri Derian threw a two-hitter for her first collegiate shutout as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took a 1-0 win over Willamette in the opening game of a doubleheader, and the Athenas were able to follow up with a 4-3, 10-inning win in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

With the wins, CMS improves to 9-6-1 on the year, while Willamette falls to 6-14 with the two losses.

In the opener, CMS scored the only run of the game in the top of the first, as Delanie Stevens led off with a single and came home on a lineout to center from Avia Tuguldur for a sacrifice fly.

Derian then worked out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the first, and after leaving a runner stranded on third in the second, she retired 13 batters in a row before a leadoff single in the seventh. After the Bearcats got the tying run to second with one out, Derian got the final two outs on a grounder to short and a comebacker to secure the shutout.

Derian finished the game with one strikeout and two hits allowed, keeping the ball in the infield in the late innings, retiring the last 10 batters via groundouts.

CMS trailed 2-0 in the opening game, before tying it in the top of the fourth, as Alex Wedemeyer tripled and came home on a sacrifice fly from Imani Ferris. An RBI single from Rachel Sapirstein put CMS ahead 3-2 in the seventh, before the Bearcats were able to tie it in the bottom half.

The game went to the international tiebreaker rule in the tenth with a runner placed on second, and the Athenas were able to get the runner home on a sacrifice bunt from Lexie Stinson and an RBI grounder from Ferris.

Hannah Adams went the distance and was able to get the final three outs in the bottom half to secure the win. With the Bearcats down to their final out and the runner still on second, shortstop Danica Stirling made a sliding stab of a sharp grounder in the hole and got the out at first to finish off the win and help Adams improve to 6-2 on the year.

Sapirstein hit 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while Tuguldur batted 3-for-5, and Mrdah Murali was 2-for-4.

CMS will complete its spring break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader at George Fox, before returning home to face SUNY-Oneonta on Saturday at 12 p.m.
