CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Giselle Lai was 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with four RBI, including the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took both ends of a doubleheader with SUNY-Oneonta 8-7 and 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.
With the wins, CMS moves to 12-9-1 on the season, while Oneonta falls to 2-12 with the losses.
Danica Stirling led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, and then was sacrificed over by
Lexie Stinson. Stirling alertly took third on the play on the throw to first to put the winning run 60 feet away with one out. Lai then grounded to shortstop, and Stirling was able to beat the throw home with a headfirst slide for the dramatic winning run.
The Athenas seemed to be in control up 4-0 after three innings.
Delanie Stevens led off the first with a single, and came home on a single from
Avia Tuguldur.
Hina Usuda led off the second with a single, and came home on a Lai RBI single. CMS then scored two unearned runs in the third, as Usuda had an RBI groundout, and
Megan Kho came home on a passed ball.
However, the Red Dragons went ahead 6-4 after a five-run fifth inning, which all started started with two outs and nobody on base. The Athenas took the momentum back in the bottom half with three runs. Kho led off with a single,
Brooke Goodman was hit by a pitch, and Stirling and Stinson drew walks to force home a run.
Lai then had her second RBI of the day with a single to pitcher, and
Rachel Sapirstein hit a sacrifice fly to put CMS back in front. Oneonta tied it in the seventh, but
Hannah Adams was able to leave runners on second and third to keep the game tied. Sapirstein then started a 5-4-3 double play in the seventh for the first two outs and Adams picked up a strikeout to set up the walk-off in the bottom half.
In the nightcap,
Mrdah Murali broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the fourth, and
Perri Derian came on in relief and threw three shutout innings to get the win.
Alex Wedemeyer gave CMS a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI triple, and Lai broke a 1-1 tie in the third with another RBI triple to make it 2-1.
