CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Perri Derian pitched out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the first, and then left the bases loaded in the seventh with a game-ending strikeout to finish off a complete-game shutout, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took the second game of a doubleheader from Williams 3-0 on Friday at Athena Field.
Williams took the first game 2-0 behind a complete-game one-hitter with 14 strikeouts from Sadie Leonard. With the split, CMS moves to 12-9-1 on the year, while Williams moves to 3-7 with the split.
Derian got out of a jam in the first with the bases loaded and none out, retiring the first out on a pop-up to
Danica Stirling at shortstop, getting a key strikeout for the second out, and then fielding a comebacker to leave the bases loaded.
CMS then struck for two runs in the bottom of the first, as
Delanie Stevens walked and stole second.
Giselle Lai then singled to third base and went to second on the throw to put two runners in scoring position. One out later,
Alex Wedemeyer had an RBI single, with Lai scoring a second run when the throw got away.
The Athenas tacked on another run in the third on an error, as
Rachel Sapirstein singled and came home when she slid under the tag on the throw home.
Derian was one away from the shutout, when Williams strung together two two-out singles, and a walk to load the bases. With the count 2-2, Derian then was able to get the game-ending strikeout on a perfect change-up to win it.
CMS lost the first game 2-0 as Leonard, who came into the day with 47 strikeouts and an 0.53 on the year (in 24 innings) was five outs from a no-hitter, before
Giselle Lai broke it up with a line drive single to right.
Sapirstien finished 2-for-3 in the nightcap, while Derian finished with a six-hit shutout with 14 groundouts and two strikeouts, one of which ended the game.
CMS will be back in action next weekend when it returns to SCIAC play with a three-game series with Cal Lutheran, beginning with a home game on Friday at 3 p.m.
