CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Grace Minturn had three goals and five assists,
Ella Brown scored five goals, and
Julia Ryan had 25 draw controls to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team to a 22-6 win over Willamette on Wednesday evening at Zinda Field.
With the win, CMS closes out non-conference play with a 6-3 overall record, while Willamette falls to 2-5 with the loss.
The Athenas took an 8-0 lead after the first quarter, with seven different players scoring the first seven goals, before Minturn closed out the frame with two in a row.
Julia Ryan and
Ella Seidel opened with free position goals, with
Amelia Ulmer and
Cate Lewison following with the next two. Brown scored her first, and
Kaia Scott added one, before Minturn made it 8-0 with goals at the 3:17 and 1:29 marks.
The Bearcats scored the first goal of the second quarter to break the ice, but
Maya Mihara scored twice in a 4-0 run that stretched the lead to 12-1, with Minturn and
Kate Larson adding goals as well.
Eleanor Shen joined the goal-scorers club with a tally in the third, while Seidel, Ulmer, Larson and Lewison each added their second.
Summer Matsik led the Athenas with four caused turnovers, while Minturn had a team-high six ground balls. Ryan's efforts in the draw circle gave the Athenas a 27-2 edge in draw controls.
CMS will be back in action when it returns to league play on Saturday with a key road game at Redlands, which will be a battle for second place as each team comes in with just a loss to Pomona-Pitzer (with the Athenas falling 10-8 and the Bulldogs falling 9-8).
