Stags Baseball Takes Series Opener from Whitworth 15-10

AZUSA, Calif. - Dillon Martin had a grand slam homer in the first and a three-run homer in the fifth to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team to a 15-10 win over Whitworth in the first game of a four-game series on Friday at Cougar Baseball Stadium on the campus of Azusa Pacific. 

CMS now stands at 7-3 on the season with the win, while Whitworth slips to 6-9. 

The Stags trailed 3-0 after the top of the first, but responded with six in the bottom half. Bryce Didrickson walked to lead off the game, and eventually scored on Martin's grand slam. Carter Bennett added a solo home run to go back-to-back, and Jett Shue scored on a groundout, giving the Stags a 6-3 lead after the first inning.

In the second inning, Rider Gordon singled, and came home on a Bennett RBI groundout before Max Pemberton extended the lead with a three-run homer, putting the Stags ahead 10-5 after two innings.

The Stags added to their lead in the fifth inning. Martin hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot that increased the lead to 13-7. Blaise Heher homered in the sixth inning, adding another run and pushing the lead to 14-7. 

In the seventh inning, Alex Henderson doubled and later scored on Bennett's single, making it 15-8 in favor of the Stags.

Martin led the offense with three hits and seven RBIs, including two home runs. Henderson contributed with a triple and a double, collecting three hits and scoring three runs. Pemberton added a home run as part of his three RBIs. Bennett also hit a home run, driving in three runs with his two hits.

Parker McGraw earned the win out of the bullpen, pitching 4 innings and yielding just one earned run on four hits, with five strikeouts. Brayden Thomas and Andrew Blackett combined for 2 innings, allowing a total of 2 runs, with Blackett striking out 2 in his 1 2/3 innings of work.

The two teams will have a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m., and conclude the series with a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
