AZUSA, Calif. -
Carter Bennett hit a walk-off two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the tenth to give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team a 6-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader with Whitworth on Saturday at Cougar Baseball Stadium.
CMS also took the opening game of the twinbill 12-9, as it improves to 9-3 on the season with the two wins, while Whitworth falls to 6-11 with the defeats.
The Stags were one out away from winning the nightcap 3-2, but a single with two outs led to an unearned run that forced the game into extras. Whitworth scored twice in the top of the tenth, but
Max Pemberton had a pinch hit solo homer with out in the bottom half to cut the lead in half.
Bryce Didrickson and
Alex Henderson drew consecutive walks, and a wild pitch put the winning run in scoring position.
Dillon Martin, who had three RBI in the opening game on Saturday, and a two-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap, was intentionally walked before Bennett found the 5-6 hole with a two-run single to walk it off.
Bryant Smaaladen threw five innings of relief to get the win, allowing five hits and striking out six.
Tegin Maloney started and threw five innings, allowing two runs and striking out seven.
In the opening game, the score was tied 4-4 in the fifth, when Martin gave CMS the lead for good with an RBI single and
Jett Shue followed with a three-run homer to make it 8-4.
Whitworth closed to 8-7 in the top of the sixth, but Bennett had an RBI single and
Cruz Wexler added a two-run single in a foru-run bottom half to help give CMS some breathing room. Whitworth had a two-run single in the ninth to cut it to 12-9 but could come no closer.
Martin was 3-for-5 with three RBI in the opener, while
Rider Gordon was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Shue finished with five RBI for the game.
Dominic Rolla went five innings to get the win, and
Colin McNiven closed out the final two outs.
