CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team dropped a dramatic 14-13 sudden death overtime decision to No. 20 Wagner in the final game of the Claremont Convergence Tournament on Saturday, after also falling to No. 10 UC Irvine 12-5 in the first game of the day.
The Wagner game saw plenty of drama, as the Seahawks tied it in regulation with two goals in the final 2:22 to make the score 12-12. After Wagner went ahead in the first extra session,
Isabel Del Villar tied it with just seven seconds left to force into sudden death.
However, immediately after drawing an exclusion, Lily Carrick was able to finish off the win for Wagner with 37 seconds in the first sudden death session to take the 14-13 win.
CMS trailed 5-1 early, but came all the way back to take a second-half lead.
Caitlin Muñoz and
Christina Marlow scored back-to-back goals, and
Grace Clark closed out the half with a goal to make it 6-4 at the break.
The Athenas then had four goals in a row in the third, with
Valerie Wraith scoring two in a row to close out the run and put CMS ahead 10-8. Wagner knotted it up 10-10, bur Del Villar scored the first of her last-second goals to close out the third and make it an 11-10 CMS lead.
Wraith had five steals to go along with a team-high four goals, while Clark had three goals and Muñoz and Del Villar each had two.
Natalie Stearns finished with seven saves.
CMS gave No. 10 UC Irvine a tough battle for a while, as Clark and Muñoz scored in the first quarter to give the Athenas a 2-1 lead, and the Anteaters were only able to take a 3-2 lead into the break.
Tatum Dwyer scored early in the third after two straight UC Irvine goals to close the gap to 5-3, but the Anteaters were able to pull away for the 12-5 win.
Mason Spencer had nine saves in goal for the Athenas, who will next be in action when they host Occidental on Wednesday evening.
