CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Julia Ryan had 24 draw controls, setting a new NCAA Division III career record with 782 as only a junior, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team earned a 19-12 win over Redlands on Wednesday evening at Zinda Field.
Ella Seidel had six goals to lead the offensive attack for CMS, which moves to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the SCIAC, while Redlands slips to 9-5 overall and 5-4 in league play with the loss.
Ryan came into the day with 758 draw controls in her three seasons, just eight behind the Division III record of 766, which was set by Claire Connolly of Babson (2022-25). She broke that mark with 5:35 left in the second quarter with her ninth, and finished the day with 782. That figure leaves her only nine behind the all-divisions record of 791, which was set by Maddie Jenner of Duke from 2019-23.
Redlands battled CMS evenly for much of the contest, knotting the score at 8-8 late in the second quarter, before Seidel scored two straight goals to give the Athenas a 10-8 lead at the break. Redlands opened the second half with a goal to close to 10-9, but CMS scored four straight goals to create some separation.
Grace Minturn started the run with a goal, and
Kaia Scott followed with another, both of which were assisted by
Cate Lewison.
Eleanor Shen tallied one with 9:57 left in the third to make it 13-9, and
Maya Mihara scored off a loose ball 44 seconds later to stretch the lead to 14-9.
Redlands scored two straight goals to claw back to 14-11 wo close the third quarter, but CMS went on a 5-0 run to start the fourth to put it away. Mihara started the run off an
Ava Goldson feed just 15 seconds into the fourth,
Amelia Ulmer tallied one to make it 16-11, and Seidel added two more tallies around one from Goldson to put CMS in front 19-11.
Ulmer finished with three goals for CMS, while Minturn, Shen, and Mihara each had two. Lewison had a team-high four assists, while
Kate Larson added a goal and two assists.
Kate Risse led the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls in front of
Lyla Johnston, who had nine saves.
CMS will be back in action this Saturday when it travels to Occidental for a 1 p.m. contest.
