Sapirstein, Ramirez Homer as CMS Softball Splits at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - Rachel Sapirstein hit a grand slam, and Annabella Ramirez added a two-run shot, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took a 7-0 win in the opening game of a doubleheader at Whittier on Saturday, before the Poets bounced back to win the nightcap 8-5. 

With the split, CMS moves to 14-16-1 on the year, and 5-10 in the SCIAC, while Whittier moves to 19-15 overall and 7-8 in league play.

Hannah Adams threw a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts in the first game. The score was deadlocked at 0-0 into the fifth, when the Athenas broke through with five runs. Danica Stirling led off with a single and came home on an RBI single from Lexie Stevens. After a Delanie Stevens single loaded hte bases, Sapirstein hit her second career homer over the wall in left field to make it a 5-0 game. 

In the sixth, Hina Usuda led off with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Stirling. Ramirez then homered to left-center for her first career round-tripper to make the score 7-0. Adams then retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh to finish off the shutout win. 

Stevens was 3-for-4 in the opening game, while Stinson was 2-for-3, Sapirstein was 2-for-4 with her four RBI, and Usuda was 2-for-4. 

In the nightcap, CMS overcame a 3-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth, but Whittier scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the split. Megan Kho had a two-run double in the fourth, and came home on an RBI triple from Stevens to tie it 3-3.

After Whittier went back ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Gaby Robel tripled in a run to knot it back up 4-4 and came home on a sacrifice fly from Usuda. 

Alex Wedmeyer was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, and Sapirstein finished 2-for-4 for her second multi-hit game of the day. 

CMS will be back in action next weekend for a three-game series with Occidental, including a home doubleheader on Saturday that will serve as the program's Senior Day.
