CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer scored the game's first three goals and never trailed as it defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 16-6 on Wednesday evening to secure the regular season title and the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament next week.
CMS falls to 10-4 on the year with the loss, and 7-2 in the SCIAC, and will be the second seed next week, opening against either Chapman or Redlands at home on Wednesday evening. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 13-1 overall and 9-0 in the SCIAC with the win.Â
Ella Seidel scored two goals, and four other players had one for CMS, while Lyla Johnson had 12 saves in goal.
Cate Lewison and
Julia Ryan each tallied three ground balls, and Ryan had 12 draw controls to extend her NCAA career record to 813.Â
Kate Larson scored the first goal for CMS to close the gap to 3-1, and
Amelia Ulmer scored off a loose ball to make it 5-2 early in the second. The Sagehens then surged with five goals in a row before Lewison scored with 2:10 left in the half.Â
Seidel scored two second half goals for the Athenas, and
Stella Hansot added one, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to hold on and capture the win.Â
CMS will close out the regular season at home on Saturday against Chapman at 1 p.m., which will also be Senior Day for the program's eight seniors.Â
