Athenas Lacrosse Closes Out Regular Season with 23-8 Senior Day Win over Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team celebrated its eight seniors on Senior Day, and the senior class scored 15 of the goals on its way to a 23-8 win over Chapman on Saturday in the regular season finale.

CMS improves to 11-4 on the season and finishes 8-2 in the SCIAC, earning the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, when it will host a semifinal on Wednesday evening. Chapman finishes 9-6 and 5-5 in league play and will be the No. 4 seed.

The Athenas honored Cate Lewison, Jessica Sloan-Cooper, Abby Dercole, Hannah Conte, Grace Minturn, Sophia Shalz, Amelia Ulmer and Lyla Johnston before the contest.

Ulmer finished with eight goals and two assists for CMS, while Minturn had four goals and four assists and Lewison had two goals and three assists. Sloan-Cooper, a defender who has overcome injury woes, added her first goal of the season, while Johnston had seven saves to get the win in goal, with Dercole, Conte and Shalz contributing to the defensive effort in front of her.

CMS trailed 2-1 before a four-goal run that included Ulmer scoring once and Minturn twice on an unreleasable yellow card penalty. Chapman got back within 6-4, but CMS scored the final four goals of the half, including two from Ulmer, to take a 10-4 lead into the break.

Sloan-Cooper started the second half with a dash from midfield after a ground ball to make the score 11-4, and after Chapman scored twice to make it 11-6, CMS scored five more in a row from five different scorers, with Ella Brown, Ella Seidel, Stella Hansot, Ulmer and Lewison all finding the net.

Julia Ryan had 25 draw controls, as CMS held a 30-3 advantage in that department. Brown finished with three goals, Eleanor Shen had two, and Ava Goldson chipped in with three assists.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night to face Redlands in one of two SCIAC Semifinals.
