AZUSA, Calif. -
Alex Henderson hit a grand slam in the second inning to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team overcome an early 3-0 deficit and take a 16-4 win over Caltech in the first of a three-game series on Friday at Cougar Stadium.
CMS improves to 24-11 overall and 13-6 in league play with the win, while Caltech drops to 4-31 and 1-18 in league play with the loss. Henderson finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBI, while
Slader Spoor was 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Spoor drove home the first run of the second inning with an RBI single to close the gap to 3-1, and Henderson followed with a long drive to right field that cleared the stadium to put the Stags ahead to stay.
After Caltech got back within 5-4,
Carter Bennett led off with a double and came home on a sacrifice fly from
Blaise Heher in the third. Spoor then had his second RBI single of the game to make it 7-4, and
Bryce Didrickson added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-4 after three innings.
Rider Gordon hit a solo homer in the fourth to push the lead to 9-4, before the Stags scored seven times in the sixth to enforce the 10-run rule. Henderson drove home the first run with a single to right center,
Josh Jacobs had a two run single, Slade Spoor hit a two-run double, and Didrickson capped it off with an RBI single.
Andrew Blackett got the win with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one run, and
Parker McGraw threw three shutout innings to get the save.
The two teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader at Caltech tomorrow at 11 a.m.
