CMS Tennis Receives USTA Grants for Play/Replay System

The Biszantz Family Tennis Center will receive a total of $17,500 in USTA Grants

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The United States Tennis Association (USTA) awarded a $7500 Tennis Venue Services grant to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and the USTA Southern California section awarded a $10,000 grant, for the installation of PlayReplay at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, which debuted during the 2026 spring season.

CMS and Trinity (Texas) are the only Division III schools currently utilizing the PlayReplay system, which uses high-definition cameras to track every ball and movement, allowing for real-time challenges to line calls.

CMS utilized the challenge system at every home match this season, including the men's and women's SCIAC Championships and the men's and women's NCAA Division III Regionals, and will utilize it when the NCAA Division III Championships return to Claremont in 2027 for the second time in the last three years and sixth time since the Biszantz Family Tennis Center opened in 2009.

"PlayReplay has significantly raised the bar for all team and individual matches played here at CMS," said men's tennis head coach Paul Settles. "The system is accurate, simple to use, and eliminates any sportsmanship issues that arise over line calls, allowing players and coaches to place their focus on fair competition."

The Biszantz Family Tennis Center has long been regarded as one of the top tennis facilities in the country since it opened, and is the only on-campus facility that has hosted the NCAA Division III Championships in recent years. The new technological enhancements only further its state-of-the-art reputation, demonstrated when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association hosted a PlayReplay officials' training session at Biszantz with Anthony Montero, the ITA's Director of Officiating.

The USTA's Tennis Venue Services grant program is designed to enhance existing tennis venues and construct new ones in order to provide increased playing opportunities in communities across the country. The significant funding was made possible by the expansion of the grant program in 2025 in order to meet the increasing demand for tennis courts as tennis participation continues to rise nationwide.

Since 2005, the USTA's TVS grant program has awarded more than $34 million in TVS grants, including more than $16 million in 2025, which supported nearly 300 projects impacting more than 2,500 courts.

"We are committed to supporting the enhancement and construction of tennis facilities in communities across the country," said Theodore Loehrke, Managing Director, Section Partnerships, USTA. "Investing in the development of tennis facilities nationwide helps support the USTA's mission of growing tennis to inspire healthier people and communities everywhere."

In addition to the grant monies provided, the PlayReplay system was installed with the help of donations from the program's alumni and supporters, in what is just the latest of many capital improvements to Biszantz.

"The overwhelming support that the CMS tennis programs have received over the years has been vital not only in building Biszantz, but also in adding enhancements to keep our facility on the cutting edge of collegiate tennis," said Settles. "Our supporters have helped us add live scoring and live video through Playsight to enhance the viewer experience, permanent shade structures to enhance the spectator experience, and now electronic line calling to enhance the athlete experience. The generosity of the CMS tennis community is what allows us to maintain these projects over the long term, host major events, and remain the envy of the Division III tennis world."
