CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Emily Ramey-Root, who is in her second stint on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field coaching staff, was promoted to the associate head coach position, CMS announced today.
Ramey-Root returned to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field program for the 2024-25 season, after previously spending eight years as an assistant coach with CMS from 2014-21. In the last two years, she has helped the Stags and Athenas sweep both SCIAC titles in 2025 and 2026, while helping the Athenas finish sixth at the most recent NCAA Division III Championships in 2026. Glenn Stewart, Ramey-Root has also been a part of the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year for both the women's and men's programs in each of her first two seasons of her return. This past year, CMS sent a combined 18 athletes to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, while 32 athletes earned All-West Region honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
In her first stint with CMS track and field from 2014-21, Ramey-Root coached 14 SCIAC Champions, 62 All-SCIAC members, two school record holders, 16 NCAA National qualifiers and five All-Americans. She was also part of five SCIAC Coaching Staffs of the Year, as CMS won a combined 11 SCIAC team titles (six women, five men) during her time on staff. The Athenas also had a fourth-place finish – the highest in program history – at the NCAA women's outdoor track and field championship in 2018.
In between her two tenures in Claremont, Ramey-Root served as an assistant coach with the cross country and track and field teams at St. Olaf in Minnesota, where she helped the Oles to two straight league cross country championships and top-15 finishes at nationals. She also produced nine national qualifiers and four All-Americans during track and field season.Â
In addition to her coaching roles at CMS, Ramey-Root has also served as one of the advisors for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.Â
Ramey-Root earned her master's degree in history from Claremont Graduate University in 2017 during her first tenure as an assistant coach. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in history and political science from Concordia University Irvine in 2013.
