Lexie Roth scored off a cross from
Flora Glantz with 12:34 remaining to break a 1-1 tie and give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team a 2-1 win over UC Santa Cruz in the first-ever game at Nakasone Field on Tuesday evening.
Glantz assisted on both goals for CMS, which moved from its former home at Pritzlaff Field to Nakasone Field. Nakasone was the former stadium for football, lacrosse and track and field, before those sports moved to the newly-constructed Sports Bowl at the Roberts Campus this fall.
Jamie Mitsuyoshi scored in her college debut with 13:01 left in the first half, just 26 seconds after checking into the game, to give CMS a 1-0 lead.
Preslie Lampitt started the play with a cross in front of the goal, and Glantz was able to get a touch on it in between two UC Santa Cruz defenders. The ball went back to Mitsuyoshi at the top of the six-yard box, and she slotted it home after her first collegiate touch.
UC Santa Cruz evened the score in the 61st minute when they bent in a corner kick, but Roth was able to give CMS the game-winner when she got on the back end of a Glantz cross. A deflection went to Roth, who converted a left-footed half-volley inside the six-yard box.
Glantz also almost had a goal of her own, but hit the crossbar in the middle of the second half with the score tied 1-1. CMS finished with an 11-4 edge in shots for the game.
The Athenas will be back in action on Sunday, when they host Redlands at 11 a.m. in a non-SCIAC game before concluding the opening week with a game against Lewis & Clark on Monday at 11 a.m.
