Sierra Troy converted on a rebound after
Flora Glantz hit the post with 15:02 left to break a 1-1 tie and give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team a 2-1 road win over Macalester on Sunday morning.
With the win, CMS moves to 3-1-1 on the year, bouncing back from a 1-0 defeat to Carleton on the first leg of its Minnesota road trip on Friday. Macalester slips to 2-2 with the loss.
Glantz sent a shot across the goalmouth off the left post with just over 15 minutes remaining, which bounced directly back into the middle of the penalty area. Scots goalie Abigail Heuga was taken out of the play trying to track the initial shot, and Troy was the first one to the deflection and was able to slot the ball into the vacated net for her second goal of the season.
CMS had to ride out the final 15 minutes with a one-goal lead, defending a pair of late Macalester corner kicks, but the defense held stout in front of
Andra Marinescu, who got the win in goal with two saves.
Echo Malinowski-Cunningham and
Nicolette Daniel played all 90 at center back, with senior
Ava Allen returning from injury this weekend to join
Carmel Randolph on the outside.
The Athenas took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a highlight-reel goal from
Lexie Roth. Randolph played a long, high ball down the middle of the field out of the back, and Roth leaped in the air, raising her foot to shoulder level to bring the ball down. Once the ball fell at her feet 30 yards from goal, she was able to one-touch it and chip it over the head of starting goalkeeper Lily Salazar and into the net to put the Athenas up midway through the first half.
Macalester answered just 1:38 into the second half to tie it 1-1, but CMS then controlled play the rest of the way, recording the last 12 shots of the game, with the shot from Troy providing the difference. CMS finished with a 19-6 edge in shots for the full 90, as well as a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday when they open SCIAC play with a road game at Whittier.
