Ava Allen scored her first-career goal on a 25-yard blast in the 16th minute, and
Frankie Fragola tacked on an insurance goal late, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Whittier in its conference opener on Wednesday evening.
CMS improves to 4-1-1 on the season with the win, while Whittier slips to 2-3-1 with the defeat.
Allen put the Athenas in front at the 15:31 mark when she first earned possession 80 yards from goal. After working a give-and-go, she dispossessed the Poets at midfield and kept her run going up the right sideline. From outside the 18, she let loose a shot that sailed into the upper-left corner and gave CMS the early lead.
CMS dominated play throughout, but Whittier goalie Sofia Lopez had 12 saves to give the Poets a chance. However,
Frankie Fragola finished off the win with 4:50 left with her first goal of the season.
CMS finished with a 21-3 edge in shots on the day, including 14-0 in shots on goal.
Andra Marinescu went the distance for the shutout in net.
The Athenas will be back in action on Saturday night when they host Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest.
