Athenas Golf Up By Six Strokes After First Day of California State Intercollegiate

VENTURA, Calif. - Christine Yu shot a -3 and Alisa Ching added a -2 as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team played its first round of the 2026-27 season in the red, shooting -6, to lead after the first day of the California State Intercollegiate at Olivas Links.

CMS leads by six shots over UC Santa Cruz, which finished the first 18 holes at even par. Pomona-Pitzer was third at +7, before a big drop to Redlands in fourth at +20 out of the nine teams in the field. 

Yu opened with a bogey on hole No. 12, but then rattled off three birdies on her next four holes to quickly get to -2. She had a birdie on her 16th hole (No. 9) to move to -3, which ended up leading the individual leaderboard after the first round. 

Ching opened up with three birdies on her first four holes to quickly get out to the lead, and ended up in second place at -2 for her first round of the season. Kate Keith also ended up in the red after her first collegiate round with a 71, which featured three birdies in a span of six holes on her back nine. Precilla Tea finished at even par after closing with two birdies on her final four holes. 

The second round will get underway tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. as CMS will try to earn a tournament win in its first event of the season, and the first event under new head coach Lexi Nielsen.
