VENTURA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team finished in first place at the California State Intercollegiate by eight strokes, finishing at +1 over the two-day tournament, with first-year Kate Keith sharing individual medalist honors at -3 in her collegiate debut. 

CMS was challenged on the second day by UC Santa Cruz and Pomona-Pitzer, but was able to hold them both off as the Banana Slugs and Sagehens tied at +9 for second place, eight shots behind the Athenas. 

Keith shot -1 in her first round yesterday and came back with a -2 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for the lead and record her first two collegiate rounds in the red. She actually bogeyed her first hole of the day on Tuesday to fall to even par, but then finished with 14 pars and three birdies in her final 17 holes. She picked up a birdie on her 17th hole (hole No. 2) to pull even with co-champions Annabelle Chan of Pomona-Pitzer and Samantha Shaw of UC Santa Cruz and then parred her final hole to earn medalist honors. 

Christine Yu finished one shot behind Keith at -2, alone in fourth place as one of four players in the field to finish in the red, while Alisa Ching also had a top-10 finish in seventh place. Precilla Tea had an even-par opening round on Monday, and Jayla Provance had a +3 on Tuesday to be the fourth scorer and help the Athenas secure the title. 

The championship also provided a victory for Lexi Nielsen in her head coaching debut, after she was hired this summer. Nielsen previously served as an assistant coach at Division I Long Beach State before joining the Athenas. 

CMS will be back in action on Oct. 12-13 at the Hollins Cup, hosted by UC Santa Cruz.
