CLAREMONT, Calif. - Nicholas Coop scored the game's only goal for Whittier in the 65th minute as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Whittier in its conference opener on Wednesday evening at Nakasone Field.
With the loss, CMS slips to 3-2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Poets improve to 2-0-4 on the season and start off league play with a win.
The game-winning goal came as Coop passed to Nils Negardin inside the box and got played in behind the CMS defense. He was then able to one-time a shot past CMS goalkeeper
Axel Jimenez, who had shutouts in his first two collegiate games at Nakasone Field coming in to the contest.
CMS had its best chance to tie in the 83rd minute, when
Daniel Zhu whistled a shot just wide of the right post. Zhu led CMS with four shot attempts, while
James Gomez had three, and Jiminez finished with five saves.
The Stags will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Cal Lutheran for a 6 p.m. contest.
