Box Score 3 THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Schreiner at the Cal Lu-Fornia Invitational on Saturday at Cal Lutheran University, but it was sandwiched between two five-set defeats to Hardin-Simmons on Friday evening and UC Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon.
With the 1-2 weekend, CMS now stands at 4-5 after its three season-opening tournaments, heading into SCIAC play.
CMS cruised in the Schreiner match, winning 25-19, 25-16, 25-15 to open Saturday afternoon's play.
Ari Clarkson led the way for the Athenas with 12 kills, while
Phoebe Shorney added 10.
Shae Delany and
Elise Arends each had 15 digs.
The second set saw CMS turn a 12-11 deficit into an 18-12 lead with a 7-0 run, which included three kills and a block from Shorney. A
Samantha Riter service ace made it 23-14, and CMS finished off the set with a Clarkson kill and a Schreiner error.
CMS took control of the third set at the exact same stage, turning a 12-11 lead into a 24-14 advantage with a 12-3 run, which was capped off by a Riter ace and two kills from Clarkson.
CMS tried to make it a two-match sweep against UC Santa Cruz in its second match on Saturday, but fell in five sets, 25-20, 15-25, 18-25, 25-19, 15-10.
Shorney had 19 kills in 29 attempts for the Athenas, while
Hayden Lin had 29 assists and Riter added 23. Delany also had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.
Hardin-Simmons eked out a 26-24, 20-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11 win over CMS on Friday evening, as the Athenas twice came back from a set down to tie it. Shorney had 18 kills for the Athenas, and
Anna Ryan added eight in 21 attempts. Arends had a big day defensively with 24 digs.
CMS will be back in action when it opens SCIAC play on Thursday night at Cal Lutheran.
