CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Ashlee Sento had nine kills with only one error and 17 digs to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Chapman on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Pavilion.
Set scores were 25-15, 25-23, 25-17 as the Athenas earned the sweep to improve to 5-6 on the year and 1-1 in the SCIAC. CMS has picked up all of its five wins by sweep this year, while three losses have been in five sets and three others in four. Chapman slips to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in league play with the win, after opening up with a victory over Pomona-Pitzer.
The second set was the one that had the most drama, as Chapman had a bid at pulling even, taking an 18-16 lead.
Shae Delany had a kill,
Hayden Lin had an ace, and
Phoebe Shorney had a kill to put the Athenas back in front 19-18.
A
Lauren Staples kill put CMS ahead 23-21, before the Panthers responded with two straight points to tie it 23-23. Sento then had a big kill to put the Athenas up one, and a block from Staples and
Solvej Eversoll finished off the set 25-23.
Chapman had a 5-0 run to go ahead 9-8 in the third set, but CMS used a 7-0 run to turn a 14-13 lead into a 21-13 advantage. Delany had two kills during the run, while Eversoll had two blocks (one solo and oen with Staples). The Panthers fought off two match points to get the score to 24-17, but Shorney finished off the match with an unassisted kill to give the Athenas the win.
Shorney led CMS with 10 kills, while Sento had nine on 24 attempts with one error for a .333 percentage, Delany had nine, and
Sabine Kemos added six in a balanced offensive attack. Eversoll finished with seven blocks, two solo, and Lin (19) and Riter (18) combined for 37 assists.
CMS will be back in action on Tuesday night when it travels to Pomona-Pitzer for a 7 p.m. contest.
