CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Luke Allen scored the game-winner in his collegiate debut, and
Matteo Quadrini added a bicycle-kick goal in the second half to seal it, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team improved to 3-0 on opening week with a 2-0 win over Lewis & Clark on Sunday at Nakasone Field.
CMS began opening week with a comeback 3-2 win over UC Santa Cruz on Tuesday, and then knocked off No. 2 Trinity 1-0 on Friday. Lewis & Clark was opening its season, as it falls to 0-1.
The Stags held a 16-3 edge in shots, but took a while to break the ice. Allen, who had checked into the game in the 27th minute, scored six minutes later when he got on the back end of a through ball from
Sean Lee and slotted it home inside the post.
Lewis & Clark had a bid for a tying goal against the run of play in the 78th minute, as Zidane Indarta hit the crossbar on a line drive shot from 30 yards out. CMS then finished it off late on a highlight-reel goal from Quadrini.
James Gomez started the play with a long through ball into the right side of the box for
Collin Ross, who was able to settle it, and create some space against his defender to chip a cross in front of the goalmouth. Quadrini and Lewis & Clark goalie Micaiah Garan arrived at the same time, and the ball took a high bounce at the top of the six-yard box, and Quadrini was able to bicycle kick the ball into the empty net with his back to goal.
Garan kept it a scoreless game early with two rapid-fire saves no shots from Quadrini and Gomez, but eventually the Stags were able to get two past him. Axel Jiminez had one save to get his second shutout in a row for CMS.
The Stags will be back in action next weekend when the play two games at Wheaton College in Illinois, a neutral game with North Park on Friday and then facing the host Thunder on Saturday.
