CMS' Lim Wins National Singles Title

Mobile, Alabama- CMS' Kristin Lim (So-Honolulu, HI) captured the Division III Women's Singles title at the USTA-ITA Division III Small College National Championships in Mobile, Alabama over the week-end with a convincing 6-0, 6-3 win over Samantha Frank of Gustavus Adolphus College. Lim, who was seeded fourth in the tournament, dropped only four games en route to the title and became the first player in Athenas Tennis history to win the ITA Division III National title.  She advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kendra Higgins from the University of Chicago and a 6-1, 6-0 win over number one seed, Lauren Chen from Carnegie Mellon to reach the final. Lim then advanced to the Small College "Super Bowl" where she lost to Division II Champion, Alida Muller-Wehlau of Armstrong Atlantic University, 6-3, 6-2.

Lim and partner Crystal Lim  (Fr.-Orange, CA) reached the finals of the Division III Women's Doubles tournament.  Lim and Lim beat Li/Vaca Guzman from the University of Chicago 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Dawson/McManigle from Emory University 6-3, 6-0 in the semi-finals. They lost to Higgins/Hu from Chicago University in the finals 6-3, 6-0. Lim and Lim are expected to be ranked second nationally when the ITA fall rankings come out later this month.
Participants in the USTA-ITA Division III Small College National Championships are determined through placement in eight qualifying tournaments of the USTA-ITA Regional Championships, held in October. CMS hosted the USTA-ITA West Regionals Oct. 1-3, with Lim and Lim winning the doubles and singles titles, respectively, to advance to nationals in Alabama.

Both CMS players earn All-American status as a result of their wins this fall at the regional and national tournaments.

The annual USTA-ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and crowns men's and women's singles and doubles national champions in each of the ITA's four, small-college divisions (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College). Each division (men's and women's singles and doubles) consists of the eight champions from the regional tournaments, from which a national (divisional) champion is determined during the first 2 1/2 days of competition. National champions from each division square off in the "Super Bowl" of small college tennis to determine the overall ITA national small college champions. Those winners then earn berths into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, a Division I event in November.
