CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the first several minutes of the
first half, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team and
Chapman University traded leads. A 12-2 run over a five minute span
midway through the first half then gave CMS the lead for good as
the team came away with a 68-56 win over Chapman on Wednesday night
at Ducey Gymnasium.
With the win, CMS improves to 10-4 overall, 6-0 in SCIAC play as
the team has won 10-straight overall. The win also sets up a
crucial mid-season SCIAC game on Saturday night, as CMS travels to
play a Redlands team that is also undefeated in SCIAC play. Tip-off
is set for 7 p.m. in Redlands.
With the score even at 8-8, senior G Cody
Mivshek and junior G Remy
Pinson made back-to-back baskets at the 12 minute mark
of the first half which sparked the decisive 12-2 run as CMS would
lead for the rest of the game. During the run, six different CMS
players scored.
CMS built its lead to as many as 18 points with three minutes
remaining in the first half, but Chapman (7-7, 2-3) narrowed its
deficit to single digits at 41-32 as sophomore G Colin
Zavrsnick hit a three-pointer as time expired in the first
half.
To start the second half, Mivshek scored a bucket for CMS to get
its lead back to double-figures which is where the score would stay
for the rest of the game. CMS led by as many as 19 points in the
second half. Mivshek had a team-high 16 points and five assists
while sophomore G Jack
Grodahl and F Kevin
Sullivan contributed 14 points and 10 points,
respectively. Sullivan also had a game-high eight rebounds.
For Chapman, Zavrsnick had 15 points while sophomore G
Taylor Hamasaki had a game-high 18 points.
