Second ranked CMS Stags Tennis had eleven players contribute to
opening day wins over NAIA powerhouses #4 Westmont and #3 Vanguard
on Thursday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Stags' four
freshmen - Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR), Max Macey (Wilton, CT), Daniel Morkovine (San Carlos, CA), and
Rohan Shankar - accounted for six wins
against no losses in their CMS dual match debuts.
Both Macey and Morkovine helped CMS take a 2-1 advantage after
the doubles against Westmont. Macey partnered senior Neel Kotrappa (La Verne, CA) in a
first time pairing that yielded an 8-1 win at #3 doubles to give
the Stags an early 1-0 lead. Morkovine formed another first time
partnership with sophomore Lestter Yeh (Arcadia, CA), with an
equally auspicious result, giving CMS a 2-0 lead with their 8-3 win
at #2 doubles.
After junior Joe Dorn (Washington D.C.) and
Kotrappa had completed straight set wins at the #1 and #5 singles
positions, Shankar provided the clinching victory at #6 singles
with two long service holds at 4-3 and then 5-4 in the second set.
Macey's tough two-set win at #4 singles marked the final point the
Stags would earn against the fourth ranked Warriors.
Against Vanguard, CMS was equally impressive in the opening
doubles matches, winning two of three against formidable opponents.
At #3 doubles, Kotrappa this time partnered sophomore Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO) to
an 8-4 victory and a 1-0 lead against the Lions.
After splitting #1 and #2 doubles, CMS took a 2-1 lead into
singles where their first year players were again impressive.
Morkovine was an easy winner at #3 singles, giving the Stags a 4-1
lead, while Hull provided the clinching win at the #5 spot. Stags
veterans Nik Marino (Jr. - San Diego,
CA) and Zhenya Pereverzin (Sr. Capt -
Clackamas, OR) earned the remaining two points for CMS with two set
wins at #2 and #4 singles respectively.
Stags Tennis returns to the BIszantz Family Tennis Center on
Saturday against #23 Bates at 10:00 AM, then travel to Caltech for
their SCIAC opener at 3:00 PM.
