SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned a 5-4 win over Case Western on Saturday in the semifinal round of the ITA Indoor Nationals at the Swanson Tennis Center.
With the win, CMS improves to 6-0 on the season and avenges a loss to the Case Western in the NCAA Semifinals. The Spartans suffer their first defeat of the campaign and fall to 9-1 on the year.
The Stags fell behind after doubles 1-0 for the second match in a row, although
Josh Kim and
Sibi Raja earned a 6-1 win at No. 2.
Advik Mareedu leveled the match at 1-1 with a quick 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, and
Henry Wilson put the Stags ahead with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. After Case Western tied the score 2-2 with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2,
Caleb Settles put CMS ahead to stay with a dramatic win at No. 6, taking the match 6-3, 7-6.
Settles led 6-5 and 0-40 on Rohan Bhat's serve, but Bhat staved off four match points in a row to get it to a tiebreaker. Settles then saved two set points before winning the tiebreaker 10-8 to get the 2-0 win.
The clinch then came from Raja at No. 3,who won a 7-6, 6-1 decision after taking the tiebreaker 7-4. Kim then had a comeback win at No. 4 to finish off the 5-2 win, taking a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision.
CMS will be back in action when it tries to win the ITA Indoor title against Chicago at 7 a.m. Pacific time (9 a.m. local).
