Stags Football Holds on to Sixth Street Trophy with 20-14 win over Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Anderson Cynkar caught an 85-yard touchdown pass in the first half that proved to be the winning points as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team earned a 20-14 road win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening, maintaining the Sixth Street Trophy for a second straight season.

With the win, CMS moves to 4-0 on the season, including 2-0 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the league. Thanio Bright and Jacob O'Connell each had interceptions to lead the Stag defense, while George Kruger had a team-high nine tackles.

The Stags scored three touchdowns early and then held on the rest of the way for a 20-14 win. Pomona-Pitzer got to the CMS 25-yard line in the closing minutes with a chance to win it late, but Michael Houk coming up with a big sack on 3rd-and-22 before the Sagehens turned it over on downs on a desperation 4th-and-27.

CMS struck first just 1:24 into the game, as Walter Kuhlenkamp completed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Mason Cotton. Bright intercepted a Sagehen pass on the next drive, and CMS made it 14-0 on a one-yard touchdown from Justin Edwards, his 49th of his career. Cotton set it up with a 25-yard reception down to the two-yard line, and Edwards punched it in two plays later.

Cynkar answered a Pomona-Pitzer touchdown with his 85-yard catch and run to make it 20-7. The Sagehens got back within 20-14 after a seven-minute drive to close out the third quarter, and had one more chance after another seven-minute drive in the fourth, but the Stags got the stop they needed with the Houk sack to take over with 2:15 left. Edwards carried three times for a first down to enable CMS to kneel down and take the win.

Kuhlenkamp finished 16-of-25 passing for 257 yards and two touchdowns, with Cynkar ending with 113 yards receiving. Edwards ran 20 times for 68 yards and caught six passes for 42 yards. Joey Asta had seven tackles to help the CMS defensive effort, while Kirby Baynes had six solo tackles and Tarius Hamlin had five,

CMS will be back in action on Satuday when it returns home to face Chapman in a huge contest. The Panthers were the only team to defeat the Stags last year, as Chapman was able to earn the spot in the SCIAC Championship game at CMS' expense.
