WHITTIER, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team opened SCIAC competition with a pair of wins at Whittier, defeating the host Poets 243-44 and adding a 210-90 win over Chapman on Saturday at the Slade Aquatic Center.
Katy Shaw swept the 200, 500 and 1000 free for the Athenas to lead the way, while Nina Makhervaks won both backstroke events.
Shaw took first in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:40.23, leading a 1-2-3 Athena finish with
Avalon Sanders second and
Kyra Burns third. She then came right back in the next event to take the 200 free in 1:57.33, with teammates
Corley Smith and
Anna Schrag finishing second and third. She concluded the meet with a 5:15.01 in the 500 free, edging Smith (5:18.30).
Nika Makhervaks turned in the top time in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.37, edging teammate
Annika Sharma by just .19. She added a win in the 200 back in 2:08.02 to sweep both events.
Mackenzie Mayfield led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breast with a 1:08.00, followed by
Kelly Prawira and
Molly Beetner.
Annette Chang was second ahead of Sharma in the 50 free by just four-hundredths of a second (25.12 to 25.16), and then added a first-place finish in the 100 free in 54 seconds flat, edging Sanders (54.39) and Mayfield (54.51) in another 1-2-3 finish.
The Athenas began the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as
Caitlin Kuhlmann, Mayfield, Sharma and Chang won by almost two seconds over Chapman, finishing in 1:49.18. The Athenas added a tie for a 200 free relay win with Chapman in the final event, with Sharma, Mayfield,
Ally Rudolph and Chang matching Chapman's 1:39.40.
CMS dominated both diving events, earning the top three in the three-meter and top four in the one-meter.
Alexis Romero,
Izzy Doud and
Josie Kearns had the top three scores in the three-meter, while Doud took first in the one-meter, followed by Kearns,
Anna Zeren and
Meilan Uyeno.
CMS will be back in action next week when it travels to Caltech for a dual meet, trying to move to 3-0 in SCIAC.
