LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
Izzy Doud won both the one-meter and the three-meter dives to highlight the performance of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team as it competed at the three-day Winter Collegiate Invite at East LA College, hosted by La Verne, from Friday-Sunday.
Katy Shaw earned a pair of second-place finishes in the distance events, earning NCAA "B" cut times in both, breaking five minutes in the 500 free with a 4:59.90 and swimming a 17:07.31 in the 1650, which set a new personal best. She finished behind only Montana White of Division II Azusa Pacific in both events.
Corley Smith was also third in the 500 free with 5:03.89 and fourth in the 1650 with a 17:38.62, while
Avalon Sanders was fifth in the 1650 and sixth in the 500.
CMS came in seventh place (out of 16 teams) with 720.5 points, with CSU East Bay and Azusa Pacific finishing first and second. UC Santa Cruz was the top Division III finisher in fifth place with 910.5, followed by Pomona-Pitzer (882.5), CMS and Chapman (628).
Doud scored a 253.25 on the one-meter dive to win by 22.8 points over Lorelai Carney of Biola. She then scored 272.25 in the three-meter to lead a 1-2-3 finish for the Athenas, as
Josie Kearns finished second and
Alexis Romero was third.
Mackenzie Mayfield came in fourth place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:32.24, which moves her into eighth place in CMS history, with
Allison Nguyen also qualifying for the finals and coming in eighth.
Kelly Prawira was fourth in the 200 breast with a 2:23.16, and
Sun Young Byun was fourth in the 100 fly in 56.73.
Annika Sharma reached the finals in the 200 free and was sixth with a 1:54.24, while also winning the B final in the 100 back with a 57.84.
The Winter Collegiate Invite at ELAC essentially serves as a dry run for the SCIAC Championships, which will be held at the same venue, and following the same format of 9 a.m. prelims and 5 p.m. finals.
CMS will be back in action after Thanksgiving for its annual two-day meet with Pomona-Pitzer, which will be held on Dec. 6-7 at Pomona-Pitzer's Haldeman Pool.
