CMS Volleyball Falls in Five to Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team rallied from a 10-2 deficit in the fifth set to get two match points, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to close on a 3-0 run for a 17-15 win to take a dramatic five-set win on Friday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Set scores were 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-12, 17-15 as the Sagehens were able to bounce back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits for the home win. CMS slips to 19-5 overall and 13-2 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 16-10 overall and 11-5 in league play.

Brooke McKee had 22 kills to lead CMS, while Brenna Bell and Dani Beder wach had 12 and Georgia McGovern had 53 assists. Dede Carranza had 28 digs to increase her career total to 2065, just 56 shy of the program record held by Megan Coleman.

Trailing 10-2 in the fifth, Shae Delany started the comeback with two kills around a Carranza ace to close the gap to 10-5. With the Sagehens up 12-7, CMS rattled off five points in a row to pull even, with Beder starting the spurt with two kills and McKee capping it off with two kills.

A McKee kill and a Solvej Eversoll block gave CMS a match point up 14-13, and another McKee kill put the Athenas ahead 15-14, but Pomona-Pitzer fought off both match points on Paige Mountanos kills and were able to come away with the close win. Mountanos finished with 20 kills for the Sagehens in the win.

Despite the loss, CMS can still earn the regular season SCIAC title outright, and the No. 1 seed in the SCIAC Tournament, with a home win tomorrow against Occidental at 4 p.m. That match will also serve as Senior Day for the program's seven seniors.
