CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Katy Shaw broke five minutes (4:59.77) in the 500-yard freestyle to take first place, with first-year
Avalon Sanders coming in second, to highlight the performance of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team on the first day of a two-day dual meet with Pomona-Pitzer on Friday.
The Athena divers also had the top six scores in the one-meter dive, with
Izzy Doud earning first,
Alexis Romero second and
Josie Kearns third. Pomona-Pitzer holds a narrow 62-48 lead with two more sessions to come tomorrow.
Shaw began the day in Boston, where she gave a presentation, but was able to fly in for the start of the meet and ended up cracking the 5-minute barrier, which only five Athenas have ever broken, including Shaw, who is tied for the program record with a 4:57.37, along with Mia Syme.
Sanders, meanwhile, finished in 5:01.60 to come in second place in the meet, while moving into the top 10 in CMS history (ninth).
Madeleine Kan set a personal-best time in the 50 free with a 23.66 to come in second place, breaking her old mark by .13 and moving up from ninth to fourth in CMS history.
Mackenzie Mayfield added a third-place finish in the 200 IM in 2:06.48, just .19 out of first and .01 out of second.
The second day will get underway tomorrow at 10 a.m., with a second session at 3 p.m.
