CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Solvej Eversoll had eight kills in 12 attempts and
Brenna Bell added nine in 18 attempts as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday on the second day of the Pacific Coast Classic, bouncing back from a 3-1 defeat to Centre in the morning.
With the split, CMS moves to 2-1 on the young season after opening yesterday with a win over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Set scores were 25-10, 25-20, 25-16 in the UW-River Falls win, as the Athenas asserted themselves following their earlier defeat. With the score 9-5 int he first set, CMS went on a pair of 4-0 runs to stretch the lead to 17-6, with
Mia Urosevic and
Georgia McGovern contributing aces. A 5-0 run pushed it to 23-9 behind kills from Bell,
Brooke McKee and
Shae Delany, as the Athenas took the first set 25-10.
CMS had to hold off UW River Falls in the second set after leading by as many as seven, but Eversoll had two late kills to help put it away.
Ashlee Sento then finished off the match with a kill to make the third set 25-16.
McKee ended up with a team-high 10 kills, while McGovern had 32 assists and 12 digs.
In the first match of the day, Centre earned a 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over the Athenas by taking tight wins in the third and fourth sets. With their backs against the wall in the fourth, trailing 19-13, CMS rattled off six points in a row to pull even, as
Samantha Riter had an ace and McGovern, Bell and Delany had three straight kills. The Colonels won the next three points, though, and were able to take a 25-22 win and the 3-1 victory in the match.
Beder had a terrific performance in the losing cause fot CMS, finishing with 13 kills in 24 attempts and no errors for a .542 hitting percentage. McKee and Bell each added 11 kills and McGovern had 43 assists and 12 digs.
Dede Carranza chipped in with a team-high 24 digs.
CMS will be back in action next weekend when it travels to WashU in St. Louis to compete in the East-West Battle.
