CMS Splits at Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, McGovern Records 3000th Assist

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Georgia McGovern went over 3000 career assists, becoming the fourth Claremont-Mudd-Scripps setter to reach that milestone, as the Athenas split on the second day of the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, falling in five sets to East Texas Baptist and sweeping Whitworth 3-0.

With the split, CMS now stands at 6-3 on the season, after going 2-1 at all three of its season-opening tournaments. East Texas Baptist improves to 9-1 with the win, while Whitworth slips to 8-2 with the defeat.

Set scores against Whitworth were 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 as the Athenas were able to come away with the split. In the first match, CMS took the first two sets before ETBU came back for a 22-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-21, 15-11 win.

The loss spoiled the 3000-assist milestone for McGovern, who came into the day with 2994 and reached the plateau on a Dani Beder kill in the first set before finishing the match with 43 (and finishing the day with 3069 after 32 more against Whitworth), as well as a big match from Solvej Eversoll, who had 17 kills in 25 attempts for the Athenas.

Against Whitworth, Brooke McKee had 16 kills and Eversoll had her second straight strong effort with 10 kills in 20 attempts and no errors, including two straight kills to cap off the first set after CMS led 23-19. In the second set, McKee had four kills in a 7-0 run that turned a 15-13 deficit into a 20-15 lead. Whitworth fought off two set points to get within 24-22, before Eversoll finished off the set again with a kill.

In the third set, the Pirates were within 16-13 before a 4-0 CMS run opened up a healthy lead, with Eversoll and McKee each getting a kill, before closing out the match with a 25-20 win after a McGovern kill and a Whitworth error for the final two points.

In the match against East Texas Baptist, CMS took the first set 25-22 after Eversoll and Brenna Bell combined on a block for set point. The second set saw the Athenas roar out to a 14-4 lead and coast for a 25-19 win when McKee put down a kill.

The momentum swung in the third, when ETBU went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 22-15. The Tigers took that momentum into the fourth by racing out to a 14-8 lead, but CMS won six points in a row to tie it 14-14, with Shae Delany picking up kills for three of those points. ETBU was able to hold the Athenas off, though, and earn back-to-back kills for a 25-21 win to tie the match. An early 4-0 run in the fifth put ETBU up 5-1, and the Athenas got as close as two points, but were unable to come all the way back.

Eversoll added eight blocks to her 17 kills, while Bell had 10 kills and six blocks. Dede Carranza had 18 digs, and McGovern and Delany each had 12.

CMS will have two weeks off before facing Pomona-Pitzer at home on Sept. 27 in its SCIAC opener.
