CMS Volleyball Opens SCIAC Play With Sweep of Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Brooke McKee had 15 kills, including eight in a tight first set, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday night in the SCIAC opener for both teams at Roberts Pavilion.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-14, 25-16 as the 10th-ranked Athenas move to 7-3 on the season, while the Sagehens fall to 5-6.

CMS led by four late in the fourth set, but the Sagehens were able to get back within 23-22. McKee had her seventh kill of the set to put the Athenas ahead 24-22, but Pomona-Pitzer was able to fight off both set points to get back level at 24-24. McKee came through with another big kill to put CMS in front, and then went back to the baseline for a service ace that gave the Athenas the first set.

CMS took the momentum into the second set with the first four points, including an ace from Georgia McGovern and two straight kills from Brenna Bell and Shae Delany. McKee had a kill in a 3-0 run that put CMS ahead 10-3, and then she ended the second set with another ace for a 25-14 win.

The third set was tight midway through with CMS ahead 12-11, but the Athenas rattled off six straight points, capped by a block from Brenna Bell and Dani Beder. Solvej Eversoll and McGovern came up with another block on match point to finish it.

Dede Carranza led CMS with 15 digs, while McGovern finished with 27 assists.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it travels to Occidental before returning home on Tuesday to face Caltech.
