CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team won five different swimmers win individual events, and secured the win by taking the final relay, as it earned a 114-90 win over Division I California Baptist in a distance meet on Friday at Axelrood Pool.
The meet included the standard freestyle lengths of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1650 yards, while the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley were 300 yards. The two relays were also 500 yards, with the opening medley featuring 200 yards of the backstroke, 150 of the breaststroke, 100 of the butterfly and 50 of the freestyle.
Revere Schmidt gave the Athenas their first individual win of the day when she dominated the 1650 in 17:34.83, a margin of almost 13 seconds over Kai Flanagan of the Lancers.
Avalon Sanders then followed with a win in the 200 free in 1:55.93, leading a 1-2-3 finish as
Allison Nguyen was second and
Katy Shaw came in the third.
Mackenzie Mayfield was the winner in the 300 yard IM, finishing in 3:23.84 to take it by 2.27 seconds.
Madeleine Kan took the 100 free in 53.30 for her top time of the season, after finishing a close second in the 50 free.
One of the most exciting races of the day was the 300 back, as
Caitlin Kuhlmann trailed the entire way until the final touch to the wall, winning by just five hundredths of a second in 3:18.90.
Kelly Prawira had a similar finish in the 300 breast, but came in second by just one hundredth of a second to Lynn Henke of CBU (3:46.28 to 3:46.29).
The Athenas then capped off the meet to secure the team win with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle relay, as
Annette Chang,
Annika Sharma, Shaw and Sanders came in first in 4:40.29 to win by .53. The CMS B team of
Ally Rudolph,
Aanya Kongettira,
Allison Nguyen and
Sun Young Byun also came in third.
Diving wasn't included in the meet, but the Athena divers were in action yesterday at the Lancer Diving Invitational at California Baptist.
Josie Kearns qualified for the finals in the three-meter and finished in 15th place with a score of 206.05.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts a SCIAC double dual against Cal Lutheran and La Verne, with diving starting the meet at 10:30 a.m., and swimming beginning at 11:30 a.m.
