CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country team had five of the top 12 finishers as it won the NCAA West Regional by 50 points over Colorado College on a rain-soaked Pomona-Pitzer Cross Country course on Saturday morning.
Riley Capuano came in second in 21:31.3, while Elle Marysla was third in 21:39.7 to lead the way for CMS.
Hope Dragseth earned a seventh-place finish in 21:51.0, with
Sadie Drucker cracking the top 10 in ninth place in 21:58.8, coming in just under the 22-minute mark.
Sara Wexler was the fifth Athena to cross the line in 12th place to secure the team title, giving CMS five scorers before the third Colorado College runner was able to cross.
Brannan Rosenfeld also earned All-Region honors for the Athenas with a 34th-place finish.
CMS finished with 33 points on the day, with Colorado College finishing with 83, one year after the Athenas edged the Tigers by just one point. Pomona-Pitzer finished in third place with 102 points, while Trinity (Texas) was fourth with 146. UC Santa Cruz was the fifth-place finish with 149 points.
The course was soaked with a heavy rainfall, resulting in muddy terrain, and shin-deep standing water at different locations around the course.
CMS earned its 17th straight team qualification to nationals with the first-place finish. The Athenas will look to earn another podium finish (top four) next weekend in Spartanburg, South Carolina, after a second-place finish in 2021 and a fourth-place finish in 2023.
