NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country team finished fourth out of 33 teams, including 16 who are currently nationally ranked, at the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday.
The Athenas had five of the top 40 finishers in a meet that included the top five teams in the nation. CMS had 158 points and finished ahead of No. 1 NYU, which came in fifth with 179, but Williams earned the win with 73 points, while MIT was second with 97 and Johns Hopkins third with 113.
Riley Capuano was the top CMS finisher in 21:27.1 to come in 24th, while
Elle Marsyla was close behind in 26th with a time of 21:30.8.
Hope Dragseth was 33rd 21:36.3, breaking her personal best for a 6K race by 28 seconds, while
Sara Wexler and
Sadie Drucker finished out the CMS scorers in 37th and 38th, respectively in 21:45.9 and 21:47.7.
Jie Yi Denise Chen was 54th for CMS in 22:05.4, while
Olivia Backholm was 72nd and
Brannan Rosenfeld 80th in a field of 261 runners.
CMS also sent some runners to the UC Riverside Highlander Invitational and finished 13th in a field of largely Division I competition.
Emily Kendrick was the top Athena in 64th place with a time of 21:51.1, while
Sally Gaskell (75th),
Mia Voce (78th) and Talia Green (79th) were all in the top 80 in a field of 258 runners.
CMS will be back in action in two weeks for the SCIAC Championships, when they will try to win their 15th straight league title.
