Stags Baseball Salvages Split with Emory in Season-Opening Twinbill

ATLANTA, Ga. - Alex Henderson had five RBI and Parker McGraw threw four innings of one-hit relief to get the win, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team earned a 9-2 win over Emory in the second game of a doubleader on Friday, earning a split after the Eagles won the first game 11-3.

CMS opened the scoring in the second inning when Rider Gordon was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a throwing error. Henderson grounded out but brought Gordon home for an unearned run. The Eagles quickly responded in the bottom half with two runs, capitalizing on a passed ball and a groundout, taking a 2-1 advantage.

In the third inning, CMS made a decisive offensive push. Keegan Cabrera delivered a two-RBI single, bringing Blaise Heher and Jack Potter across the plate. Henderson singled up the middle, driving in two more runs as Dillon Martin and Cabrera scored, giving the Stags a 5-2 lead.

The seventh inning saw CMS extend their lead further. Nate Seluga walked and advanced on a single by Potter, followed by a two-RBI single from Rider Gordon. Henderson then singled, driving in two more runs to give him five of the day, pushing the score to 9-2, which would hold as the final result.

Claremont-M-S maintained their lead throughout the game with steady pitching and defense, shutting out the Eagles in the final six innings. The team's efficient offense and ability to capitalize on errors were key factors in securing the victory.

Dominic Rolla pitched three innings in his first appearance since 2023 after missing last season with an injury, giving up the hits and one earned run while issuing no walks. McGraw delivered an effective relief performance over 4 innings, allowing only one hit and one walk. McGraw's ability to induce ground balls was notable, recording nine groundouts, including one double play, and securing the win with his record moving to 1-0.

In the opening game, Emory scored four times in the first and five in the third to take control. Andrew Mazzone had an RBI double, and Henderson had a sacrifice fly for the Stags. Heher and Mazzone each finished 2-for-4.

The teams will finish the three-game series tomorrow for a 1 p.m. first pitch (weather permitting).
