GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Mackenzie Mayfield earned first-team All-America honors after taking the final spot in the championship final of the 200-yard individual medley by five-hundredths of a second, coming in eighth place on the first day of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.
Mayfield swam a 2:02.63 in prelims, knocking almost a full second off of her personal best (2:03.57), which places second in CMS history and earning her a spot on the podium. She was just .05 ahead of the ninth-place finisher (Allison Greeneway of Emory), with the top eight earning positions in the championship final.Â
In addition to her individual race, Mayfield was also part a second-team All-America performance from the CMS 400-yard medley relay team. The Athena quartet of
Samantha Ennis,
Kelly Prawira, Mayfield and
Madeleine Kan came in 12th place, and swam the second-fastest time in CMS history with a 3:45.55. That time was almost two seconds faster than their seed time, and behind only the 2010 NCAA team (Tessa Dover, Annie Perizzolo, Katie Bilotti, Emma Jones) in CMS history, which swam a 3:44.60.
Sun Young Byun also swam in the 200 IM prelims along with Mayfield and took .04 off of her best time with a 2:05.89, which ranks seventh in CMS history. Kan swam a 23.39 in the 50-yard freestyle to trim a tenth of a second off of her personal best, which places her third in Athena annals. Kan ended up 19th out of 61 in prelims, coming just short of the 16-swimmer cutoff for the evening session (23.30).
Day two of the NCAA Championships will take place tomorrow and will see Mayfield, Byun and Kan competing in the 100-yard butterfly, as well
Izzy Doud and
Meilan Uyeno in the one-meter dive, and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
