Athenas Golf Finishes Fourth of 24 Teams at Jekyll Island Invitational

Esther Lee tied for the low score of the tournament for the Athenas (+10), placing 14th
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team finished in fourth place, 23 shots ahead of fifth, at the 24-team Jekyll Island Invitational this weekend. 

The Athenas finished at +46 over the three rounds, including a 294 (+6) that was the best in the field in Saturday's second round.  Emory took the championship at +18, one shot ahead of Carnegie Mellon, with Wellesley third at +32. Denison and Rhodes tied for fifth, 23 shots behind CMS, while SCIAC rival Redlands was 10th at +82. 

Esther Lee and Jessie Kong tied for the top individual finisher for CMS at +10, which ranked 14th in the field, with Stella Cheng one shot back at +11. Ella Chiu was 35th (out of 120) and scored for the Athenas all three days.  

Lee closed out the tournament with two straight 73s on Saturday and Sunday, closing with a birdie on the 18th on Sunday.

Kong was -3 on Saturday with a 69, a day when she had five birdies on her last 10 holes to close out at -5, including three in a row on No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, and one on her final hole (No. 9).

Cheng had a 74 on Saturday as well, including a birdie on her final hole (No. 9), and then birdied her 17th on Sunday before closing out with a par, while Chiu birdied her 18th hole on Friday.

CMS will be back in action this weekend at the UC Santa Cruz Invitational, before competing at the second SCIAC regular season tournament and the SCIAC Championships in April.
