PEORIA, Ariz. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team shot -5 as a team on Sunday, led by a hole-in-one from
Ella Chiu on the seventh, as the Athenas came in a close second behind George Fox at the Westbrook Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
CMS finished with a 570 over the 36 holes, after a 279 (-5) on Sunday, with George Fox holding off the Athenas charge with a 568.
Jessie Kong was the top individual finisher for CMS at -2, placing her third behind Alison Takamiya and Makensie Toole of George Fox, who each shot -7.
Kong's round of 67 on Sunday included holing out from 73 yards for eagle on the 13th. She then followed that with a birdie on 14, a birdie on 15 and a birdie on 18 to end -5 over her last six holes.
Stella Cheng and
Christine Yu ended in a tie for fifth at +1. Cheng had an opening-round 70, which included four birdies on No. 2, No. 4, No. 9 and No. 11. Yu was -1 on Sunday, with birdies on No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 to take the turn at -3.
Ella Chiu's hole in one on the 152-yard par-three 7th came on the heels of birdies on No. 4 and No. 6, and brought her to the turn at -2. She ended up finishing the tournament at +4, moving up 16 spots after her 69 on Sunday.
Berenice Stolte had a solid weekend playing as an individual, ending in 15th place at +5.
Jayla Provance added three birdies on her final round, ending up in 22nd with a final score of +8.
CMS will be back in action next week when it travels to the Jekyll Island Invitational in Georgia.
