Ma's 65 Helps Stags Golf Move up to Second After Day Two of SCIACs

COSTA MESA, Calif. - Yuefeng (Michael) Ma shot a seven-under 65 to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team move up from fifth place to second on the second day of the SCIAC Championships at the Costa Mesa Country Club. 

CMS shot -11 as a team with a 277 and now stands at -12 after the two-day tournament. The strong effort from the Stags moves them past Cal Lutheran (-11), Pomona-Pitzer (-10) and La Verne (-5) and into sole possession of second. 

Redlands, though, continued its torrid play with a -16 on the day and stands alone in first at -25, 13 shots ahead of the Stags with 18 holes left to come tomorrow. 

Ma now stands in a tie for fifth place at -4 for the tournament, four shots off the lead as he tries for the third individual SCIAC championship of his career. His round featured a 31 on the front nine (-6) as he had an eagle on No. 6, as well as birdies on No. 2, No. 3, No. and No. 8. His eagle was his second of the weekend, after starting out with an eagle on No. 2 on Sunday. He suffered his only bogey of the round on the 11th, but bounced back with birdies on No .14 and No. 17 to finish off a 65. 

Arnold He and Jamison Tan are each tied for 10th at -3, with He shooting a 69 on Monday and Tan shooting a 69 on Sunday's first round. He started Monday's round with birdies on No. 1 and No. 2, and closed it out with birdies on No. 16 and No. 18, after picking up an eagle on No. 18 yesterday. Tan also eagled No. 18 on Sunday to close out his round of 69 with a flourish.   

Yiqi (Andy) sun has been even par on both rounds, earning one of the scoring spots for CMS on Sunday. while Jack Rende shot a 71 (-1) to score for the Stags on Monday. Rende was -3 on the back nine, closing out with birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to get into the red on the final two holes.

The final round will get underway tomorrow at 7 a.m., as the Stags will hope to put pressure on Redlands in their quest for a SCIAC title.
