COSTA MESA, Calif -
Stella Cheng had a hole-in-one on the 12th hole on her way to a 72 to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team move up from third place to second after the second day of the SCIAC Championships at Costa Mesa Country Club.
CMS came into Monday trailing Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands, and shot an even par as a team (288) to move past Redlands and into second. The Athenas are now +11 after two rounds, 10 shots behind Pomona-Pitzer, and eight ahead of Redlands in third.
Cheng hit a birdie on No. 11 to improve to +2 on the day, and then stepped up to the 156-yard par three 12th, putting her seven-iron onto the green where it rolled into the cup for her first career ace. She closed out with six straight pars the rest of the way to finish with a 72.
Christine Yu had the top round for the Athenas on the day, shooting -2, including a tap in for birdie on No. 18 after her approach shot left her a foot from the pin.
Jessie Kong had an even-par 71, which included birdies on No. 6, No. 8 and No. 9.
Esther Lee had an eagle on No. 11 on her way to a 72 as well.
Lee had the top round for CMS on Sunday with a 72, with
Christine Yu carding a 73. After two rounds, Yu stands in second place with an even-par 142, just one shot off the lead held by Emily Chang of Pomona-Pitzer. Lee is currently tied for sixth at +2, while Kong is tied for eighth at +4.
The third and final round of the SCIAC Championships will get underway tomorrow morning at 7 a.m., as the Athenas will try to chase down Pomona-Pitzer and repeat their conference title.
